Homestay Opportunities
Homestay in villages in Belize
Homestay in villages in Belize
Monkey Bay Wildlife Sanctuary maintains long-standing partnerships with Belizean rural village communities that open their family homes to host our students and guests. The village homestay is an important component of our field learning programs, a rewarding experience for students and group leaders, as well as for the family members who serve as accomplished hosts. As guests, you share in the activities of daily life with your host family; cooking and eating together, helping with daily chores and talking, playing and learning with and from host family members. Living with a Belizean family is an excellent way to improve your inter-cultural communication skills and become familiar with natural surroundings and unique cultural practices. For many students, the homestay is the emotional high point of their journey to Belize.

Community Service Projects
In tandem with the homestay experience is the opportunity to roll up your sleeves and get actively involved in the life of a community by working side-by-side with dedicated local people. Service projects are co-financed by hosts and guests, and vary depending on the needs of your host community. Examples of past service projects include building an arts and crafts center with local artisans, painting a community center, installing erosion control measures, creating signs for visitors to a national park and maintaining nature trails in protected areas. Your efforts and skills make a valuable contribution to your host community. Participate in a community service project and gain an insider's understanding of Belizean life and culture, and a meaningful personal awareness.
