Monkey Bay Wildlife Sanctuary

The Sanctuary consists of 1,070 acres of tropical forest, riverine and savanna habitats. Monkey Bay is located in central Belize and is bordered by the Sibun River that flows from the Maya Mountains through the coastal savanna on its path to the Caribbean Sea. The Sanctuary is situated adjacent to Monkey Bay National Park (2250 acres), which together form a biological corridor link spanning the Sibun watershed.

Specialized in hosting study abroad student groups, Monkey Bay offers a variety of experiential learning programs that are designed to meet your interests, budget and academic requirements. As we manage our own education facility and wildlife sanctuary, we are able to facilitate:

Because of its central location and diverse habitats, Monkey Bay is home for a wide variety of flora and fauna. The 3300 acre protected area is home to a large number of exotic mammal species, including tapir, puma, jaguar, and Morelet’s crocodile. Over 250 species of birds have been recorded. The sanctuary borders the Sibun River biological corridor and has documented remains of ancient Maya settlements and ceremonial caves.

Visitors are welcome to stay and use our facilities, including a natural history library with over 500 references. We offer accommodation, fresh-prepared meals and a range of learning and adventure activities on site, in local communities and protected areas throughout Belize.

In winter 2007, we are expanding our facility options to include two new destinations available to our guests and student groups: Mountain Pine Ridge and Caye Caulker.

Mountain Pine Ridge Cabin Retreat'
Mountain Pine Ridge Cabin Retreat
In the Mountain Pine Ridge, we offer a natural, rustic retreat situated on Privassion Creek between Blancaneaux Lodge and the famous Big Rock Falls. This facility can accommodate individuals and families in the main house, and when combined with the dormitory can sleep groups up to 24 persons. The Pine Ridge is a unique area that attracts ecologists for its headwater ecosystems and eco-tourists for its waterfalls, caves, and spectacular granite-lined pools and rivers. It also offers easy access to Caracol Archaeological Reserve, which is the largest Mayan Ruin in Belize - a must see for all nature lovers. Nestled in the heart of this, our retreat is a special place that few visitors ever have opportunity to visit.

On Caye Caulker, we are working with a local fisherman and his family to develop a hostel-type facility that can accommodate groups up to 18 persons. This quiet nook is located on the narrowest part of the island; the buildings overlook the western lagoon while being less than one block from the eastern reef-side beach. Accommodation is bunkhouse-style, with internet available on-site and shared kitchen facilities available for guest use. Meals are also available from our café, serving the local catch as well as international vegetarian fare.
